The son of a Cardiff tax inspector, Follett went to university in London. He became a reporter, He began work on his first novel, Aubade, at the age of sixteen, and when it was accepted for publication by Chapman and Hall with an advance of £100, he moved to London. Aubade, published the day after Martin turned eighteen in 1957,was a modest success, selling well enough to run into a second printing in 1958 and was also published in America. Martin followed his debut with two more novels, Waiting for the Sky to Fall (1959) and A Matter of Time (1960), but the reviews of these novels were largely disappointing, and Martin turned from fiction to journalismfirst with his home town paper the South Wales Echo and afterwards together with the London Evening News. While working in London, he composed his first novel. His first best seller was his eleventh novel, Eye of the Needle, which came in 1977. A sequence of blockbusters followed. In all he’s sold 130m copies worldwide.Married to former Labour MP Barbara Follett, he has an extensive property portfolio. His most successful novel was 1989’s The Pillars of the Earth that has sold 19m copies. It was pushed back in the bestseller lists in 2009 when Oprah Winfrey picked it for her book club. It placed Follett on the Forbes list of highest paid writers for 2009, with earnings of $20 million. He was again recorded in 2010 at $20 million but didn’t make the 2011 list. The $40 million, eight-hour miniseries on the basis of the novel premiered in the US in 2010. The award winning writer of thrillers and historical novels has sold more than 100 million copies.
