Robert Costa was born on October 14, 1985, in Richmond, Virginia, the United States to parents Thomas E. and Anne-Dillon D. Costa. He attended Pennsbury High School where he was recognized for his social skills and flair for journalism. Notably, Costa will be remembered during his high school days for his ability to bring top musicians like Maroon 5, John Mayer, and Eve 6 to perform at the school events. His journalism days also began way back in high school where, as a reporter for “The Bucks County Courier Times,” he mostly interviewed musicians, bands and reviewed concerts in the Philadelphia area, earning as much as $50 per article.

He also covered professional and local sports for the student television station, PHS-TV. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from 2004-2008 and remains a member of the board of trustees as well as on the advisory committee of the John W. Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy. He proceeded to the University of Cambridge where he earned a Master of Politics in 2009.

While studying there, he was also an active member of the Cambridge Union debating society. He did internships at PBS’s Charlie Rose, ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos and in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. While he still pulled the crowd in college, he hosted and produced an interview program for NDTV called Office Hours.

After graduation, Costa became a Robert L. Bartley Fellow at The Wall Street Journal and in 2010, he worked as a reporter at National Review, an American semi-monthly magazine focusing on political, social, and cultural affairs. In 2012, he was promoted to a higher position as the magazine’s Washington editor.

While there, he was also a contributor for CNBC and MSNBC. In January 2014, he left National Review and officially joined The Washington Post and by December the next year, he became a political analyst for both NBC and MSNBC.
