Toni Braxton was born on October 7, 1967 in Severn, Maryland, to Michael and Evelyn Braxton. Her father was a minister, which is why she was brought up in a very strict religious environment. Braxton and her four sisters started singing from a young age at their father’s church. They were not allowed to engage with the popular culture but they were permitted to listen to singers like, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. For Toni especially, music became a central component in her life. She entered a number of local talent shows, and also collaborated considerably with her sisters. Following her graduation from high school, Braxton planned on becoming a music teacher, She joined the Bowie State University but left it midway as songwriter Bill Pettaway convinced her to sing professionally. Throughout her career, Braxton has sold over 67 million records, including 41 million albums, worldwide. She has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards and several other awards. Aside from her success in music, Braxton has become a television executive producer and personality, Her father worked for a utility company, but was also a minister and deeply religious man. Braxton’s mother was an amateur opera singer, and gave her daughters singing lessons that they put to use in their father’s church choir. She accomplished all of these successes while also battling health issues. She’s been treated for hypertension as well as pericarditis, a viral infection of the sac surrounding the heart.
